Philippine Auto Sales Accelerate by 6.8% in Q1 2025
Discover why vehicle sales rose 6.8% in Q1 2025 and what it means for the PH auto market.
Philippine Auto Industry Grows 6.8% in Q1 2025 Despite Passenger Car Decline
The Philippine automotive industry kicked off 2025 with promising momentum, posting a 6.8% increase in vehicle sales for the first quarter, according to a report jointly issued by the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines, Inc. (CAMPI) and the Truck Manufacturers Association (TMA).
Between January and March 2025, the total number of vehicles sold rose to 117,074 units, surpassing the 109,606 units sold during the same period in 2024. The sector’s positive start has been largely driven by the continued dominance and rising demand for commercial vehicles.
Sales of commercial units climbed a significant 13.9%, hitting 92,742 units in Q1 2025 compared to 81,395 units sold during Q1 2024. This segment, which includes pickup trucks, vans, and utility vehicles, remains the backbone of the auto market.
However, the rise in commercial vehicle sales was counterbalanced by a slump in passenger car performance. Passenger vehicle sales saw a 13.7% drop, sliding down to 24,332 units from 28,211 units the previous year. Industry insiders point to shifting consumer preferences, rising inflation, and the increasing appeal of multipurpose vehicles as reasons behind this decline.
March 2025 Sales Snapshot
In March alone, the auto industry sold 40,306 units, up 7.6% year-on-year compared to 37,474 units in March 2024. Once again, commercial vehicles led the charge with 31,857 units sold (a 16.5% increase). Meanwhile, passenger car sales declined by 16.6%, totaling just 8,449 units.
Electric Vehicles Carving Out a Space
One notable highlight in the Q1 report was the growing interest in electric vehicles (EVs). CAMPI revealed that 5,311 EVs were sold in the first three months of 2025, representing 5.73% of the total auto market.
Of these, the breakdown is as follows:
- Hybrid EVs: 4,544 units
- Battery EVs (BEVs): 692 units
- Plug-in Hybrid EVs (PHEVs): 75 units
The increasing uptake in EVs reflects a broader shift toward sustainability and fuel economy among Filipino consumers, especially with the support of government incentives and rising fuel costs.
