Honoring the Heritage of Pedagogy: TEC Opens ‘Legacy of the Chalkboard’ Commemorative Exhibit

The Teacher Education Council unveils “Legacy of the Chalkboard” at the National Library of the Philippines, celebrating centuries of dedication and pedagogical evolution.

TEC launches ‘Legacy of the Chalkboard’ Commemorative Exhibit to honor Filipino teachers

For generations, the scratch of chalk against a wooden board was a familiar sound that marked everyday classroom life. On these simple surfaces, teachers wrote lessons, solved equations, and introduced new ideas.

But more than just a tool for teaching, the humble chalkboard represents the tireless dedication of generations of teachers and the learners whose lives they have changed.

To honor this legacy and celebrate the continuing development of the teaching profession, the Teacher Education Council (TEC) mounted the “Legacy of the Chalkboard: A TEC Commemorative Exhibit” at the National Library of the Philippines (NLP), which will run from September 1 to 11, 2026,

As the agency mandated to strengthen teacher education and promote quality teacher preparation in the Philippines, TEC recognizes the importance of preserving the history of the teaching profession and honoring the generations of Filipino teachers whose contributions continue to transform Philippine education.

From the traditional chalkboard to a profession that keeps evolving

The legacy represented by the chalkboard took center stage during the ribbon-cutting ceremony. TEC Council Regular Members reflected on where the teaching profession has been, who continues to support it, and what it will take to support teachers in the years ahead.

Representing the deans of colleges of education, professional teachers, and educators, Dr. Rosemarievic V. Diaz underscored the long history of teaching in the Philippines—from the babaylans, who served as keepers of knowledge, to educators who stood at the forefront of the struggle for national freedom, and to today’s teachers who continue this work. She described the chalkboard as more than a classroom tool, calling it a pamana that carries the lessons and experiences passed from one generation to the next.

“So to every teacher who has stood before a chalkboard, a classroom, or a screen and continued to teach despite the challenges: Walang hanggang pasasalamat sa inyo. Some words may eventually be erased from a chalkboard, but the lessons a teacher leaves in a student can remain for a lifetime,” Dr. Diaz said.

Meanwhile, Dr. Maricris Acido-Muega, the representative from an organization composed of school leaders from public or private basic education institutions, highlighted the shared responsibility of the policymakers, schools, families, communities, and education institutions in creating environments where our educators can learn and grow.

Fr. Onofre G. Inocencio, Jr., representing the private education sector, pointed to the shift from physical chalkboards to digital learning spaces as a reminder that teaching must continue to evolve with the times. He called on all sectors to look beyond what teachers can do for learners and ask, “What can we do for our teachers? How can we better support the people who spend their days supporting our learners?”

Also present at the event were Edgardo B. Quiros, Assistant Director of the National Library of the Philippines; Dir. Jose Gabriel C. Mallari, Director III of the Strategic and Change Communication Office of

the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority; and Metrobank Foundation President Philip Francisco U. Dy of the National Teachers’ Month Coordinating Council.

Providing further context for the exhibit, Dr. Adrian Lawrence P. Carvajal, Director II of TEC’s Student Incentives Support Office, traced the evolution of teacher education in the Philippines and highlighted key milestones that have shaped the profession over the years.

A walkthrough of the zones of teacher education history

The exhibit features three thematic zones that bring together historical materials, teaching instruments, and photographs that capture the stories of Filipino teachers and the evolution of the teaching profession across different periods.

● Zone 1: The Historical Timeline

The first zone documents the story of teaching in the Philippines across key periods in the country’s history. It begins with how knowledge was passed down in pre-16th-century Filipino communities and follows the evolution of the teaching profession through the colonial periods, the Philippine Revolution, the post-war years, and the transition to the K to 12 program. The timeline culminates in the passage of the Excellence in Teacher Education Act (Republic Act No. 11713), a significant milestone in the ongoing development of teacher education in the Philippines.

● Zone 2: The Teacher Education Today

The second zone presents the Teacher Education Roadmap, the country’s 10-year strategic blueprint for teacher education, alongside key TEC initiatives, including the Teacher Education Scholarship Program, the TEC Teachers Awards, the Reframed pre-service teacher education curriculum, and the Teacher Education Centers of Excellence.

It also features historical and archival materials from the University of Santo Tomas College of Education and the University of the Philippines College of Education, including curriculum guides, textbooks, teacher training manuals, policy issuances, teachers’ guides, lesson plans, and other educational publications that offer a glimpse into the history of teacher education and the teaching profession.

● Zone 3: Interactive Space

The third zone connects the history of teacher education with its work today. A digital touchscreen kiosk provides access to the Philippine Teacher Education Register (PhilTER) and the official TEC platform. Beside it is the “Pisara ni Titser,” where the public can write personal messages of gratitude and tributes to teachers who have made a lasting difference in their lives.

Adding a more personal dimension to the exhibit is “Mga Mukha ng Karunungan,” a collection of portraits of Filipino educators from across the country. The collection reminds us that behind the broader education landscape are the teachers themselves—teachers with their own stories, struggles, joys, and experiences that often go unseen.

The exhibit forms part of TEC’s participation in the National Teachers’ Month 2026 celebration, which carries the theme “Teacher, Ikaw Naman!” #
